Job Description

Lab and Research Technician 2 employees provide increasingly complex technical support for projects and may engage in increasingly complex scientific experiments. May handle more sophisticated administrative and logistical tasks. Lab and Research Technician 2 employees operate under supervision with a degree of independence when following set protocols and procedures.

The Department of Microbiology, Immunology, and Cancer Biology, at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, is seeking a Lab and Research Technician 2 to work in the laboratory of Dr. Daniel Gioeli. The lab studies the molecular basis of cancer. The position involves performing protein and nucleic acid techniques based on tissue cultured cell lines, mouse xenografts, and patient derived tumor specimens. The incumbent will also be responsible for lab organization and maintenance, including management of regulatory and safety requirements, and will manage incoming patient specimens. The position requires frequent use of the scientific literature, appropriate data analysis, and clear data presentation.

The successful applicant will demonstrate history of: 1) excellent work ethic and above average productivity; 2) meticulous attention to detail; 3) prior personal ownership of complex project(s); 4) functioning collaboratively; 5) initiative and independence; and 6) creativity and innovation.

A Bachelor's degree is required. Major or minor in a biomedical science is preferred. A minimum of 2 years of laboratory experience is required; lab experience as a student may substitute for this requirement. Preferred experience includes tissue culture, protein isolation and immunoblotting techniques.

This position is restricted to one year. Employment beyond one year is contingent upon the continuation of funding.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position can spend extensive periods of time standing and squatting while conducting experiments or caring for animals. Also requires keyboarding and other bench work and animal procedures requiring finer finger manipulation.
