Job Description

The University of Virginia Parking and Transportation Department is seeking a Shift Supervisor to assist with: answering phones, safely operating transit vehicles, communicating instructions over a two-way radio, serving as dispatch, calling immediate/on-demand detours, coordinating and overseeing drivers and buses on route, data entry and other tasks as assigned. Shift Supervisors will work on average 12-28 hours a week with the potential to work more, depending on scheduling needs.


High school diploma or equivalent.
At least one year of experience in a transit-related field.
At least one year of customer service experience.
Virginia Commercial Driver's License Class A or B with Passenger and Air Brake endorsements is required. Applicant must have a positive point balance on license.
Effective communication skills (including proficiency in writing, reading comprehension, and verbal) are required.
Computer skills (proficiency in MS office and word, as well as the ability to learn supporting software).
Skilled in leading and organizing internal efforts.
Flexible scheduling (ability to work on the weekends, early in the morning, late at night).


Safe operation of a transit bus requires sustained sitting, driving, pushing/pulling (steering wheel and various controls), repetitive motion, use of both hands, use of either hand, fine finger manipulation, and wrist movement.

Safe vehicle operation also includes: repetitive motion with both ankles/feet, with both possessing the strength and dexterity to fully depress the service brake and accelerator (right), and turn signal controls (left) present on the transit bus units within the Parking and Transportation fleet. Boarding/alighting the transit bus requires the ability to climb stairs (at least one step up/down). Successful operation of ADA Accessible equipment aboard the transit bus requires bending, lifting, and carrying.

All of these physical requirements should be considered essential to the position. Work performed during special events and as part of servicing the equipment requires: standing, walking, and the potential for bending, lifting and carrying.
